On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, the Department of Infrastructure, Ports and Transport, in collaboration with the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC), hosted an induction ceremony to celebrate the award of an additional 23 scholarships for the 2024/2025 academic year to young women pursuing studies at the associate degree level in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Systems and Automotive Engineering and at the certificate level in Electrical Installation, Motor Vehicle Mechanics and Air Conditioning Systems within the Engineering Unit of the SALCC.
The scholarships, granted under the gender integration component of the Renewable Energy Sector Development Project, aim to reduce the gender gap in employment in technical jobs in the energy sector. The scholarships cover the cost of tuition, a laptop, uniforms, school supplies, tool kit and transportation throughout the duration of the studies. Additionally, the programme provides the opportunity for students to have an extended paid apprenticeship in the energy sector.
The programme has awarded scholarships to a total of 17 young women: 10 in 2022 and 7 in 2023, and looks forward to granting another 12 scholarships in the next academic year.
Congratulations to all scholarship recipients!
